Higher education consists of the experiences and learning at a college or university. It can lead to a bachelor’s, masters, or doctoral degree for those who successfully complete the coursework. A degree holder will have increased job opportunities available to them.
Professionals have a number of choices for degrees. Each degree takes progressively longer to complete. A degree’s credit hours can be taken at any number of institutions. Most degrees can be transferred while in progress and completed at another institution if necessary. Professionals need to complete degrees in order, starting with a bachelor’s.
A bachelor’s degree is typically the shortest degree in higher learning. Professionals generally complete their bachelor’s in 2 to 6 years, but nearly all are completed in 2 to 4 years. Bachelor’s degree courses generally have larger class sizes. They may be conducted as lectures more frequently than higher level courses.
Master’s degrees usually take 2 years to complete following a bachelor’s degree completion. Master’s degree courses typically require much more analysis and discussion than bachelor’s degree courses. An internship may be required. Institutions may require a master’s thesis before a student can receive their degree.
A doctoral degree may take anywhere between 4 and 8 years to complete. It is the most advanced degree. Professionals usually need to submit a lengthy dissertation to finish their doctoral degrees. Some fields require an internship during or at the end of the doctoral degree.
Whichever degree is chosen, professionals may attend full-time or part-time. A majority of bachelor’s classes are now offered completely online. Fewer masters and doctoral degree courses are offered online because students must discuss and interact with their professor and fellow students more.
For professionals who have already received their bachelor’s or master’s degree, some institutions may allow them to go through an accelerated course for another master’s degree. Accelerated degree programs are rigorous and short to ensure a professional receives a quality education, even if the courses take less time.
Attending college and university can be expensive. For a full load of courses at a 2 year community college, prices may range from as low as $1,000 to $5,000 per semester. For a major 4 year university, tuition may range from as low as $10,000 to as much as $50,000 per year. At a 4 year university, tuition generally includes lodging and meals for the entire year.
All colleges and universities offer financial aid to help pay for tuition and all of the expenses associated with higher learning. Financial aid can come in a variety of forms including:

- Fellowships
- Loans
- Scholarships
Professionals typically must write an essay or otherwise apply for financial aid. After being selected for financial aid, they may have to maintain a certain grade point average to keep receiving it. Financial aid can be received one time only or recur on a regular basis.
